DUHS kickers win again

The Dowagiac varsity soccer team wrapped up the Big 16 Black Division Tournament with a 4-0 victory over visiting Battle Creek Harper Creek Monday afternoon.
The Chieftains (6-6-1) finished with a 2-1 record in the Black Division, shutting out its final two opponents after opening with a 3-1 loss to Kalamazoo Loy Norrix.
Dowagiac blanked Coldwater on Wednesday, 2-0.
The Chieftains scored two goals in each half and play solid defense throughout the match.
Dowagiac also got good goalkeeper from senior Jackie Sayre.
Senior Kyleigh Mott opened the scoring with a goal in the 11th minute.
The Chieftains increased their lead to 2-0 in the 35th minute on a goal by Kristy Cooper off a corner from Hillary Bisnett.
Dowagiac made it 3-0 in the 64th minute when Bisnett scored on a penalty kick.
The Chieftains completed the scoring in the 69th minute on a goal from Cooper. Jill Billingham was credited with the assist.
Dowagiac was outshot by Harper Creek, 18-15.
The Chieftains will now begin preparation for the Division 3 district soccer tournament which Dowagiac will host.
Dowagiac will host South Haven on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Also in the first round, Edwardsburg will play Paw Paw at 5 p.m., while Otsego will play Parchment at 6:45 p.m.
Edwardsburg and Otsego will host first round games.
The second round will be played on Wednesday, June 1 with Comstock taking on the winner of the Edwardsburg-Paw Paw match at 4 p.m. The winners of Dowagiac-South Haven and the Otsego Parchment matches will play at 5:45 p.m. on June 1.
The championship game will be played at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 3. Dowagiac is the defending district champion.
