The Dowagiac Board of Education on Monday, May 2, voted on the recommendation of superintendent Larry Crandall not to reappoint Chieftain girls' tennis coach Chuck Rubino.
The vote was a 3-3 deadlock on the motion to override Crandall's recommendation.
In order to overturn the recommendation the board needed four votes.
Voting yes on the motion were Greg Ferrier, Sherry File and board president Randy Cuthbert. Ferrier made the motion, which was seconded by File.
Voting no on the motion were Bill Lawrence, Larry Seurnyck and Faye Edwards. Board member Jane Laing was not present at the meeting.
Rubino coached the Chieftains to their first regional championship in 2004 and their first appearance in the Division 4 state tennis finals.
