Column: Just checking, is it spring?

I had to look twice at the calendar this week just to make sure it was May.
What happened?
We were sailing along with nice comfortable weather, even summer-like weather until this past week.
All of a sudden I am seeing snow.
Give me a break!
It's May for goodness sake. It's time for the flowers to be blooming, the trees to be blossoming and time for youth soccer, baseball and softball to be cranking up their respective seasons.
The soccer league already had a weekend snowed out.
Monday night at Russom Field the games were canceled after the opening ceremonies were completed because it was just too cold to play.
Things weren't much better last night.
The Chieftains track meet against Niles was postponed until today.
While most sports got their games in, it wasn't much fun to be outside until late in the afternoon when the sun finally broke through the clouds and warmed things up a little bit.
But over night the temperature dropped back into the 20s.
Perhaps I am mistaken. Maybe my calendar got turned back a few pages.
Isn't 28 degrees something we see in the middle of December, January or February.
I can remember coming to work on those mornings and seeing temperatures in the 30s and even the 40s.
The good part about all this is that it really hasn't been wet.
There have been a few sprinkles here and there and the rain has not forced too many events to be canceled or postponed.
The forecast for the remainder of this week looks good with temperatures warming each day and no rain in the forecast until the beginning of next week.
Hopefully we will all get a chance to take off our winter coats, hats and gloves and enjoy the sunshine.
Hopefully we will be able to catch a few rays while taking in our favorite spring sport.
And, hopefully we will be able to get our summer baseball and softball programs off to a good start.
Let's not have a repeat of last year when it was cold and wet most of May and continued to be cool right on through the summer.
We need some warmer temperatures so that everyone can enjoy all the great things that southwestern Michigan provides us.
Let's get out and root on our favorite sports teams as they close in on the end of the regular season.
