If you look at the left hand side of this page you will notice that golf leagues and golf outing notices are starting to crop up.
For area golfers, there is no place like Southwestern Michigan.
Each year there are literally hundreds of leagues to choose from and more than a handful of golf outings to participate in.
Last year the Dowagiac Athletic Boosters and the Dowagiac Union Schools Foundation got together for the first annual Chieftain Golf Outing.
To say the event was a huge success would be an understatement.
The event, featuring special guest Gale Sayers, raised more than $20,000.
Dowagiac is holding its second event June 16 and will feature another special guest.
That announcement will come a little closer to the actual event.
I want to take this time to ask everyone who participated last year to make this such a special event to take part once again.
Those who did not get a chance to join in the fun should quickly get a hold of the Dowagiac Athletic Department (782-4470) and get signed up.
I know that there were more than a few people who told me they were sorry they didn't participate last year after hearing what a great time everyone had.
Sayers was a great choice as a first guest because he was so accomodating to the participants.
Sayers not only played, but his company donated plenty to help make the event that much more special.
Listed below are the levels of sponsorship and entry information:
Gold Level – For $1,000 a company will be recognized during the reception following the outing, on signage at the registration table, will be included in all district-wide publicity and the entry for one foursome will be paid.
Silver Level – For $250 a company will be a sponsor in the longest drive, closest to the pin or hole-in-one contest.
Bronze Level – For $100 your business will be named on one of the 18 holes as a hole sponsor.
Merchandise Sponsor – As a merchandise sponsor, a business can make a donation of merchandise or gift certificates to be used as prizes. A business may also donate services for the outing.
Golfers may enter as a team for $400 or $100 per individual.
Golfers may also compete in the hole-in-one contest, longest drive contest (both men and women), closest to the pin (both men and women), 50/50 drawings and a silent auction.
Mulligans may also be purchased by golfers.
There will be a cookout and beverages at the event, as well, as raffles and prizes.
In 2004 the event raised approximately $22,000 dollars. Former Chicago Bears standout Gale Sayers was the special guest.
The Dowagiac Athletic Boosters Club and the Dowagiac Union Schools' Foundation is working to secure another special guest for this year's event.
