The City of Dowagiac has an offer in hand from Leisure Living of Grand Rapids to purchase three acres in the commercial center for development of an assisted living facility.
The offer also proposed a three-year option on an additional three acres for future phases of development.
According to City Manager William H. Nelson Jr., Leisure Living is a well-established developer and operator of assisted living and independent living facilities throughout Michigan.
Leisure Living indicated an interest in developing a 20-bed facility in phase one, with the potential future development of 20 additional assisted living beds and an independent living facility.
Leisure Living operates 14 facilities in Michigan, including assisted living complexes in South Haven and Buchanan.
The purchase price offered is $40,000 per acre, which Nelson called consistent with other property sales in the commercial center.
