Dowagiac Union High School students will discuss "October Sky" with the book's author and other readers across the country at Brown Bag Lunch Online forums in the high school media center beginning Feb. 7 and continuing for eight additional lunch periods.
This event is part of Dowagiac Union Schools' "One Book One Community" observance underway in libraries all over southern Michigan.
Students and teachers have been reading the memoir of Homer Hickam, a retired NASA engineer who came from Coalwood, W.Va., and defied all odds against his success to become an important part of space flight history.
His inspiration encouraged young and old people alike through this book and the movie that followed.
The book was originally title "Rocket Boys."
Dowagiac Union Schools is hosting events and sponsoring projects around this book selection to join with area libraries for reading, literacy and community connections, according to DUHS media specialist Katherine Johnson.
