BENTON HARBOR – The Niles freshmen boys' basketball team tasted defeat for the first time this season as host Benton Harbor posted a 51-40 victory on Friday night.
Myles Busby led the Vikings (6-1) with 16 points, 12 rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
Martel Miller had nine points and a steal, while Logan Harpenau finished with seven points and two rebounds.
The Tigers also won the junior varsity contest 59-50.
Austin Parks led Niles with 21 points, while Nick Lucero added 13 points. Andrew Wortham led the team in rebounds with eight.
"It was a tough start for us tonight," Niles coach Josh Bourne said. "The one thing I stressed to our kids going into Benton Harbor, which a tough place to play, was to get off to a good start. We didn't handle Benton Harbor's pressure well and turned the ball over which usually led to easy buckets for them. Also our shot selection wasn't very good for the first quarter. Basically, it was very simple, we were down eight after the first quarter as a result of the issues above, and we ended up losing by nine. So we played three pretty good quarters after we settled down, it just wasn't enough to overcome."
