ST. JOSEPH – An effort from the Berrien County Animal Control Department to make sure that dogs in the County are licensed and are receiving current rabies vaccinations has been very successful so far. Val Grimes, Animal Control Director said that between Sept. 2 and Sept. 11 over 200 mid-year licenses were purchased at either the Animal Control office or the Berrien County Treasurer's Office (this does not include those sold at other facilities). Grimes added that the response from citizens she has been in contact with has been very receptive and appreciative of this additional opportunity to get their dogs licensed. Grimes also said that it is important for dog owners to schedule soon with their veterinarian because of the influx of dogs needing the rabies vaccinations. The special licensing period is only until Sept. 30, 2008.
Dog owners that have never had their pets licensed or have let their license expire, are able to purchase a license for the remainder of 2008, for a straight $10 fee for either spay/neutered or non-altered dogs (the fee for dogs between the ages of 4 and 6 months is $5). Proof of a current rabies vaccination by a licensed Veterinarian is required to obtain the license.
As previously reported, a county wide census of dogs will take place in October and owners of dogs will be required to show proof of current license for each dog owned and/or residing on the property, according to the Dog Laws of 1919. Dogs that do not have a current license, may be removed from the property and/or the owner will be cited.
Licenses may be purchased at the following locations: Berrien County Animal Control, 9204 Huckleberry Rd., Berrien Center; Treasurer's Office, 701 Main St., St. Joseph; Clerk's Office at the Berrien County South County Building, 1205 N. Front St., Niles; or participating veterinarians. Any questions may be forwarded to the Berrien County Animal Control Department at (269) 471-7531.
