NILES -- Volunteers at Lakeland contributed a total of 105,083 hours of service throughout Lakeland's facilities in 2002.
At Lakeland Hospital, St. Joseph more than 320 volunteers contributed 50,839 hours of their time during the year 2002.
At Lakeland Hospital, Niles 225 volunteers contributed 25,000 hours of service.
Of the many volunteer options available, the most hours were spent operating the coffee bar and gift shop and staffing the information desk.
Other volunteer staffed programs in Niles include a foster grandparent program and the junior health corps.
In addition to the hours Lakeland volunteers and auxilians donate, the three auxiliary organizations donated more than $320,000 for renovation and construction projects, the purchase of new equipment, and scholarship grants for their facilities. These donated funds come from special fund raising activities and from income received from the coffee and gift shops.
Joe Wasserman, president and CEO of Lakeland, continued: "Lakeland is very grateful for the smiles our volunteers share, the many kind acts and selfless service they provide as part of our health care team. We thank them for the support they provide to our staff, our patients and families and our communities."
