NILES -- Brandywine High School junior Michelle Shoemaker and Buchanan High School senior Bryce Coward are the Niles Daily Star Athletes of the Week for April 14-19.
Shoemaker is the starting catcher on the Brandywine varsity softball team which won five games last week. In a sweep of a Lakeland Conference doubleheader with River Valley on Monday, Shoemaker hit a home run in each contest. Brandywine then swept a doubleheader with Berrien Springs on Thursday. On Saturday the Bobcats won the South Bend Adams Tournament with wins over Adams, Michigan City and Boone Grove. Shoemaker hit a double against Michigan City and a triple against Boone Grove.
Coward is Buchanan's No. 1 singles player on the varsity tennis team. In the Bucks' victory at the Lowell Tournament on Saturday, Coward won the 100th match of his career. He is now 101-6 during his time at Buchanan.
