Cross-town rivalry swept by Vikings

The Niles baseball team remained undefeated Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader from cross-town rival Brandywine at Thomas Stadium.
The Vikings, now 3-0, won the first game 9-0 before finishing off the sweep with an 8-3 victory in the second game.
Niles scored seven unanswered runs in the first three innings of the opener and added two more in the bottom of the sixth inning.
John Kessick earned the victory on the mound for Niles while Chris Carpenter took the loss for the Bobcats.
Kyle Isabel and Cory Coquillard each hit a double for the Vikings. Andy Low doubled for Brandywine.
Brandywine (0-3) took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning and increased that lead to 2-0 in the top of the third before Niles put one run on the board in the bottom of the third. From that point, Niles outscored the Bobcats 7-1 in the final four innings.
Kyle Kidwell earned the victory for Niles while Josh Dickeson took the loss for the Bobcats.
Brandywine hosts River Valley today and Niles travels to Edwardsburg Tuesday.
The Niles freshmen baseball team split a doubleheader with Coldwater Friday afternoon, winning the first game 11-5 before falling 8-3 in the second game.
Anthony Saviano earned the pitching victory in the opener and Nick Etzcorn led Niles at the plate with a home run and three RBIs. Peter Brandstatter added a pair of doubles and Nate Parks also doubled.
In the nightcap Will Skalla took the loss for the Vikings. Justin Henry hit a double while Tom Robson and Grant Goodman each singled.
