DOWAGIAC – Veteran Dowagiac varsity baseball coach Andy Kruger has stepped down according to Athletic Director Greg Younger.
Younger announced the resignation on Monday afternoon, just two days after the Chieftains were eliminated from the state tournament by Lakeshore.
"Kruger cited the need to spend more time with his wife and infant daughter and therefore not being able to commit the time that he once did as the reasons to step down at this time," a prepared statement from the Dowagiac Athletic Department read.
Younger added, "Andy has had a great career coaching here in Dowagiac, which was highlighted last season with a district championship and a trip to the regional finals. We appreciate all that coach did for our program and having two young daughters myself, I can certainly understand and respect Andy's decision at this stage in his life.
"We wish Andy nothing but the best and I'm certain that he will continue to help our athletes in our baseball program any way that he can," he added.
The search for a new baseball coach will begin immediately according to Younger.
