NILES – The Old Rugged Cross Foundation (ORCF) will sponsor a stomach-warming Chili Supper on Saturday, at the Pokagon United Methodist Church (PUMC). The public is invited to the meal, from 4:30 until 7:30 p.m. in the church basement.
The menu will include a choice of a traditional red chili made with beef, and a white chili made with chicken. Crackers, garlic toast, punch, coffee and dessert will round out the choices. A donation of $5 per adult and $3 for each child age eight and younger is suggested.
Tickets are available from Old Rugged Cross volunteers in advance, and at the door. Call 683-4540 for ticket information.
The event will support ORCF activities related to restoration of The Original Old Rugged Cross Church, where the hymn, "The Old Rugged Cross," was sung publicly in its entirety for the first time 95 years ago, in 1913. The church and The Old Rugged Cross Memorial Garden are located across the street from the PUMC, in Pokagon.
The church and The Old Rugged Cross Historic Site are one block south of Pokagon Highway, just east of Highway M-51, halfway between Niles and Dowagiac.
