A Niles man sustained injuries after losing control of his moped on Gumwood Rd. south of U.S. 12 early Saturday morning.

Cass County Sheriff’s Office said David Shafer, 44, was traveling north on Gumwood Rd. when he ran off the roadway and lost control in the gravel at around 3:08 a.m. in Milton Township in Cass County.

He overturned the moped and was thrown off it. He was transported to South Bend Memorial for treatment.

Shafer was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, which remains under investigation.
