The City of Niles’ decision to move City Hall is a win-win for citizens, city employees and even visitors here.

The council announced last week it is in the process of purchasing the former Bank of America building on North Second Street — a three-story, vacant eyesore just begging for an occupant.

That’s one problem solved — a large, vacant commercial building in the downtown area is going to be full. And, the purchase is a steal at approximately $253,000.

Although naysayers believe the money may have been better spent elsewhere, this is a long-term investment that will solve a long-term problem.

Secondly, the city is moving from a building that although historically significant and architecturally beautiful, is expensive to maintain and too small to meet the city’s needs.

Third, the city is consolidating its services. Residents will find it more convenient to go to one location.

And last, but definitely not least, Chapin Mansion may finally be used to its full potential as a museum sometime in the future, which could draw visitors for tours.

Chapin Mansion is better suited as a museum; the former bank is ideal for city offices. Let officials know you support their relocation and purchase of the former bank for City Hall.
