Muscle aches, a fever, coughing, sneezing, a headache and fatigue are all symptoms we dread when coming down with the flu. Unfortunately, it's that time of year and many have already experienced some type of flu bug early in the season. The good news is there are ways to protect yourself and your family from getting the influenza virus.
Flu shots are always a good idea. Most people think by getting the flu shot, you get the flu. This is not true. The flu vaccine actually contains killed viruses that help your body make antibodies, but will not cause you to get sick. The shot is highly recommended for the elderly, the young and those with weak immune systems.
Even if you have had a flu shot, keep your body healthy. A healthy body has a much easier time fighting off infection. To make sure your immune system is in tip top shape, get plenty of rest, exercise regularly, take plenty of vitamins and eat a well-balanced diet.
It's also important to wash your hands frequently, do not share drinks or silverware with others and keep items such as doorknobs, faucets, phones and other highly-touched areas clean.
If someone in your own household comes down with the flu, keep things cleaned and sanitized to help keep the rest of the family safe.
If you do come down with the virus, drink plenty of fluids, eat healthy and remember to avoid places where you can expose others.
