NILES – The Niles Junior Varsity escaped with a 42-41 win. Leading 35-28 after the third period, the Niles advantage seemed to slip away. Shots would not fall for the junior Vikings. Niles recovered the ball with 7.1 seconds to go, but turned it over again, in a gaffe that could have cost them dearly. St. Joe was called for traveling, and the clock ran out.
Leading scorers on the Niles JV squad were Aaron Davis and Mitchell Peterek, with 15 points each.
Freshmen Basketball
Niles' freshmen (1-1) held off St. Joe for a 44-39 victory. Jordan Potthoff scored 17, while brother, Justin contributed nine and Nick Lucero had eight. Niles freshman coach, Josh Bourne was pleased. "We executed very well. Our goal was to hold them to 30. The kids showed a lot of patience down the stretch. Jonathan Eddy was huge down the stretch."
