NILES – The magical fantasy of Geoffrey Thornton's book illustrations sparkle in the Eleanor &Mowitt Drew Gallery at the Niles District Library during the holidays.
Through his colorful interpretation and images, Thornton brings to life Eugene Field's 1889 classical verse Wynken, Blynken, &Nod.
Illustrations of What's Wrong?, a children's book Thornton conceived and illustrated will also be on display through Dec. 31.
According to the artist, the Dutch tale Wynken, Blynken, &Nod "relates the nocturnal events surrounding the magical voyage of Wynken, Blynken, and Nod in their wooden-shoe sailing craft, a transformed trundle bed.
But look again! Thornton's illustrated edition offers a new interpretation of color and design.
Thornton is an educator and fine art illustrator educated at University of Notre Dame and Loyola. He recently completed a 30-year career teaching gifted and talented students in Chicago, and was honored with the Computing Educator's Web Showcase Award of educational website design.
Thornton is listed in Who's Who in American Teachers. He lives with his wife in La Porte, Ind.
The Eleanor &Mowitt Drew Gallery is located in the library's Rotunda. Exhibitions can be viewed during regular library hours: Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
