NILES – It was cold, the rain was barely falling, but that did not stop people from attending the annual Veterans Day events at Riverfront Park Sunday.
Members of the American Legion Post 26 in Niles held the Veterans Day memorial at 11 a.m., where Post Chaplain Fred Smith, along with Niles Mayor Mike McClausin, gave brief speeches to those in attendance.
Smith spoke of his days serving our country and some of his experiences. McClausin thanked the veterans for their sacrifices made over the years and of his father, who is a Korean War veteran, and his father-in-law, who is a World War II veteran.
The firing squad played taps and the Rev. Smith closed the ceremony.
After the event, everyone was invited back to the American Legion for a traditional Veterans Day dinner of cornbread and beans.
