NILES – Fernwood Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve, 13988 Range Line Road, Niles, has the following upcoming classes and events:
Nature Saplings: Deer
Sunday, Nov. 4; 3 to 4 p.m.
Discover white-tailed deer. See and touch their antlers and fur while you discover what makes deer so special. Also enjoy a walk along the trails to look for their tracks and other signs that they're in the forest. For children ages 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 years old accompanied by an adult. Class size is limited; please call ahead.
Knee-High Naturalists: Turkeys
Friday, Nov. 9; 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Let's talk turkey. Do you know wild turkeys live at Fernwood and throughout the Michiana area? Today four- and five-year-olds learn all about this wonderful bird. Take a walk through the woods, have a yummy snack, and create a turkey craft. Please dress appropriately for walking the trails. Class size is limited; please call ahead.
Fernwood's Lights Before Christmas returns for the 14th season opening on Dec. 7. The popular event continues on Dec. 8 and 9, 14 through 16, and 19 through 22. Traditional features return along with new light displays, judged ice carvings, and many new features in the planning stages. Mark your calendars to join us for this family fun event.
"Seven Photographers: Eye on Nature"

The show features nature as seen through the lenses of seven very different photographers. All the artists are members of the Notre Dame faculty or staff members. The photographers are Carol C. Bradley, Bruce Bunker, G. Christopher Clark, David Hachen, Jeff Kantor, Tom Kosel, and Bruce Noll. Enjoy this unique exhibit and support our local talent!
Master Gardener Training
Master Gardener training continues at Fernwood Thursday evenings. Provided by the Cooperative Extension Service of Michigan State University, this program is an excellent way to improve your horticultural knowledge.
Single session registration welcome. To register contact Fernwood at 269-695-6491. $14 per session for Fernwood members and $18 for others.

Nov. 1 Woodies: The Selection &Care of Shrubs and Woody Ornamentals
The best trees, shrubs, woody ground covers, and vines for this area are reviewed. Cultural information provided includes: how to judge healthy nursery plants, planting and fertilization guidelines, pruning tips and mulching. Cafe Schedule
The cafe will be closed during the day starting Nov. 2. It will remain closed until April, 2008. We will have food service during our Lights Before Christmas celebration.
Winter Hours, closings
Fernwood is on a winter schedule beginning Nov. 1.The buildings and grounds are open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Fernwood is closed Nov. 22 through 26 for the Thanksgiving holiday.
