Police union contract extends only one year

NILES – The Niles City Council approved a one-year contract extension for the police union and dispatchers at Monday night's council meeting.
City Administrator Terry Eull said the reason the contract was approved for one year instead of a three or four year because there is still some uncertainty in the finances and revenues of the city.
In other news, the board approved the appointment of Joseph Ray to the Southeast Berrien County Landfill Authority, effective immediately.
It was also approved to accept the Eull's appointment of Juan Ganum to the Niles Housing Commission to complete an expired term expiring on Dec. 31, 2009.
The board also approved a request from the Main Street DDA to conduct the annual Halloween Costume Contest in conjunction with the Downtown Niles Merchants Sixth Annual Downtown Safe Trick or Treat on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Also, the council approved the low bid of $79,244 for the purchase of a 2008 Sterling Acterra Dump Truck with dump body and underbody scraper from Hill Truck Sales of South Bend, Ind.
