NILES – A Niles High School substitute teacher has been removed from her job after she went into a little too much detail, according to Niles Community Schools Superintendent Doug Law.
Corinne Hoyt, who was filling in for the ceramics class at Niles High School Tuesday, decided to tell students a story about a situation that happened earlier this year at a funeral.
According to Law, Hoyt, of Dowagiac, told students about how she was charged with two misdemeanor counts of attempting to disrupt a funeral or burial.
Law said Hoyt was unaware that the granddaughter of the person whose the funeral she allegedly disrupted was in the class. After the student heard Hoyt's story, she informed her family members, who, in turn, informed the administration.
"She (Hoyt) didn't realize the granddaughter was in the classroom. But regardless, she should have not been talking about a situation like that. We took her out of the class after we heard about it and sent her home," Law said.
He added that it was very inappropriate for her to be discussing personal issues like that in front of a classroom and that Hoyt recognized it was not a topic she should have been talking about.
"She was apologetic, but something like that cannot be taken back after you've already said it," he said.
Law said this was not Hoyt's first time substitute teaching at the high school and that there were never been any problems before.
"She was here a few times last year, but she will not be subbing for us again. The administration took the appropriate action needed," he said.
