Bobcats clinch winning season

COLOMA — For the first time in more than a decade, the Brandywine boys basketball team is guaranteed to finish the 2011-12 season with a winning record.

The Bobcats picked up their 11th victory of the season Tuesday night with a 46-40 decision over host Coloma.

Brandywine (11-9, 4-8 Lakeland Conference) outscored the Comets (3-16, 2-10 Lakeland) 10-2 in the second quarter to open up a 19-15 halftime advantage.

Coloma grabbed an early 13-9 lead as it tried to avenge a 46-39 loss to the Bobcats last week.

Both teams netted 10 points in the third quarter leaving the Bobcats with a 29-25 advantage heading into the final eight minutes of the regular season finale for Brandywine.

Brandywine was able to outscore Coloma 17-15 in the fourth quarter as it held on for the victory.

The Comets held a 21-16 advantage in field goals, but the Bobcats were 17-of-23 from the free throw line compared to 2-of-3 for Coloma.

Alex Erwin scored 15 points to lead Brandywine, which also got seven points from both Austin Searles and Evan Hartman.

Earl Taylor scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Comets.
