Howard Bailey, 79

Howard E. Bailey, 79, of Niles, died at 6:38 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012, at Memorial Hospital in South Bend unexpectedly.

Mr. Bailey was born March 26, 1932, in South Bend to Walter E. and Beulah M. (Wolf) Bailey. He graduated from Niles High School and lived in Niles all his life. He retired from National-Standard Co. in Niles.

Howard was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 449 in Buchanan. He enjoyed traveling by car throughout the United States on the back roads; collecting South Bend-made watches and Campbell soup clocks; and home maintenance. He loved his family.

On July 11, 1953, in Niles, he married the former Jean. R. Brooks, who preceded him in death on Dec. 8, 1999.

Surviving family includes their children, Martha (Bill) Bailey Fenton and Michael (Laurie) Bailey, both of Niles; grandchildren, Morgan and Dillon Bailey; his sister, Betty Rieder, of South Bend; brother, Kenneth J. Bailey, of Richmond, Ind.; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Bernie Nemeth, of Niles.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Roy H. and Harry H. Bailey.

Funeral services for Howard E. Bailey will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles with Pastor Andy Bailey, of Griffith Lutheran Church in Griffith, Ind., officiating.

Interment will be at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens in Niles.

The family will receive relatives and friends beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
