BENTON HARBOR – Presidential candidate John McCain, a Republican Senator from Arizona, is a leading centrist for his party.
He will speak to the private Economic Club members on Monday at Lake Michigan College's Mendel Center.
Often described as a "maverick" for taking strong positions that aren't part of the mainstream Republican agenda, he's fought for reforming Washington, from eliminating wasteful government spending to immigration reform to strengthening the U.S. armed forces.
Dinner members living in Berrien County should mail their reservations immediately for ticket processing.
Members living outside of Berrien County need to make dinner reservations via voice mail no later than noon Friday by calling (269) 982-6010. All members can pick up their tickets at the Mendel Center lobby the evening of the event.
McCain began his political career in 1982 when his Arizona constituents elected him to the House of Representatives.
In 1986 he was elected to the U.S. Senate to take the place of Barry Goldwater.
But his political views took center stage in 2000 when he ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for the presidency.
Undaunted, McCain was overwhelmingly re-elected to the U.S. Senate in 2004 with nearly 77 percent of the vote.
Thanks to the efforts of U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, McCain accepted the Economic Club's invitation to be its guest. Economic Club meetings are open to members only. At present, regular and Mainstage memberships are at capacity.
