I do hope everyone is taking some time from their normal routines to stop and enjoy some of the area's festivities.
Sweltering in the hot sun while walking through the Cass County Fair last week brought back lots of memories of when I took my kids there everyday during fair week.
We used to get so hot that we drove home to cool off and then returned later.
The horses were always a favorite of my daughter and myself. I actually even learned to like the demolition derby.
The best though, other than the free stuff they give out in the commercial building, was the fair food.
I had a terrible time deciding which calorie-laden treat I would enjoy this year. The real lemonade is a must.
This was my fist year to watch the "Anything That Floats" raft race held during the annual Niles Riverfest.
Being a long-time costume maker I appreciated all the hard work which went into the clever designs and costumes worn by those participating.
Those girls in the mermaid costumes from Silverbrook I am sure were most comfortable. They were lucky to have an ideal weekend, with a nice breeze by the St. Joseph river the night before the race during the raft building and then a wonderful sunny day for the actual event.
All of these fairs and festivals are a great way for communities to enjoy these summer days together.
It never fails I see people I haven't run into for a long time and we get reacquainted.
If you missed the animals and good food at the fair, you have another chance as the Berrien County Youth Fair will open next Monday, Aug. 15 in Berrien Springs.
Our youth have worked all year to show off their still exhibits and cows, sheep and other animals. They deserve our attendance and praise.
The Berrien fair also offers some top name entertainment and different shows all during the week.
Whether it's peaches, pickles or apples, people in Michigan continue a tradition of celebration which began long ago when the different crops were celebrated.
Be sure to thank all those people who work so hard each year offering these festivals to the community.
It isn't easy to keep up your interest and devote so much time each year to these events.
Watch too for the Buchanan Fest at Pear's Mill on Aug. 27 and the coming Apple Festival in Niles the weekend of Sept. 29.
This weekend you will probably find me on U.S.-12 for a garage sale which reaches across Michigan.
Please be careful, as I will probably be traveling much slower than my normal speed.
