Lisa Topping has been recently hired as coordinator of the Southwest Regional Office of Ferris State University.
The FSU office is located in The University Center at Southwestern Michigan College.
Topping was previously an outreach specialist with SMC's Enrollment Management for three years.
In that capacity, she assisted new students with the enrollment process, chaired Career Awareness Days, Freshman Orientation, and SMC Transfer Day and College Night.
"Ferris State University is pleased to be strengthening its relationship with SMC through this position and that we are convinced that having a full-time presence for Ferris at SMC will contribute to enhanced levels of service for individuals who will enroll with Ferris," said Roberta Teahen, dean of the University Center for Extended Learning at FSU.
Topping's position is a vital link between students, adjunct faculty and Ferris, as well as the connection between SMC and Ferris.
"I assist students with everything from applying to Ferris, financial aid, advising, buying books, registering for classes," Topping said.
SMC students earned a grade point average (GPA) of 3.32 while at Ferris, which is significantly higher than the GPA of all other Michigan community college transfer students and FSU students in general, according to SMC President David Mathews.
The Ferris programs include bachelor's degrees in accountancy, business administration, business administration with an occupational specialty, computer information systems and early childhood education, as well as a master's degree in education
