Baseball tournament play has been under way for more than a week now for many of our area youth baseball teams.
However, beginning this weekend, those All-Star teams will begin state tournament action.
Niles will be hosting three tournaments, all of which begin this weekend.
The Greater Niles Little League will be hosting the Michigan District 15 Tournament at Thomas Stadium.
The pairings are set, but may change without notice. The brackets have already changed at least twice, but we do know for sure that play will begin on Saturday.
There will be four games on Saturday at Thomas Stadium, beginning at 11:30 a.m.
The tournament will continue throughout the following week, with the championship game slated for July 18.
Howard Township and Brandywine Cal Ripken will be hosting state tournaments this weekend at Pepper Martin Park and Fireman's Park respectively.
Those tournaments are scheduled to begin tonight. (see today's sports page for more information).
We would encourage area sports fans to get out and take in a game or two at any of these tournaments.
Teams from around the area and the state will be competing for the sheer love of the game.
It's always a good time to get out to the local Little League field and watch these youngsters play. They aren't thinking about scholarships or making it to the professional ranks at this age.
They play the game merely for the enjoyment of it.
Most tournaments cost little or nothing to get in, so we can't think of a better way to spend a weekend.
