NILES – If you don't usually buckle up, it's a good time to reconsider that decision.
A statewide program has police from city, state and county sheriff's departments out looking for those who do not use their seat belts. They will be out on patrol, pulling over violators in specially selected zones on a regular basis.
Even with big yellow signs designating the zone won't deter some drivers.
During Friday's four-hour blitz on Oak Street between 15th and 17th streets, 33 traffic stops were made. Seventeen of those stopped received tickets and four additional violations were also cited according to Officer J.N. Shandaniel.
Being a state funded program, Friday's blitz in Niles involved patrols from Baroda, Michigan State Police, Niles City police and the Berrien County Sheriff's department had both a patrol car and a motorcycle officer involved in the crackdown.
