LANSING – Legislation was introduced in the state Senate this week that would designate the bridge on U.S. 12 Business Route over the St. Joseph River in Niles as the "Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Bridge."
"The City of Niles and the local [National Association for the Advancement of Colored People] have wanted to name this bridge in honor of the late Dr. King for some time, but discovered they were unable to do so without legislative authority," said Sen. Ron Jelinek, sponsor of the bill. "It's a pleasure to introduce this legislation and I anticipate quick passage in the Legislature."
Senate Bill 78 has been referred to the Senate Committee on Transportation.
