CENTREVILLE — A different level of intensity paid big dividends for the Brandywine basketball team Tuesday night as it captured the Centreville Invitational with a 57-17 win over White Pigeon.

The Bobcats (2-0) struggled to a 57-55 overtime win Monday night against Centreville in which they trailed by eight points after one quarter of play.

Brandywine only led 7-6 after the opening quarter, but outscored the Chiefs 24-7 in the second quarter to take a 31-13 lead at the half.

The Bobcats turned up the defensive intensity even more in the final 16 minutes, holding White Pigeon to two points in the third and fourth quarters, while scoring 26 second half points.

“The intensity tonight was a lot better,” Brandywine coach Josh Hood said. “We did a lot better job with our press without fouling.”

Hood said that his team watched filmed after school and tried to learn from their mistakes the previous night.

“If we are going to be successful down the road, we are going to have to play 32 minutes of basketball,” he said. “I hope last night was a lesson for them. I hope they now know we need to come to play every night.”

The Bobcats will put that to the test Friday night as they open the home portion of their schedule against Class A Portage Central.

Carlie Newman led Brandywine and all scorers with 16 points. The Bobcats also got double-digit efforts from Rachael Ort (14) and Madison Pellow (10).

Amy Nussbaum and Jordan Phelps each had four points for the Chiefs.
