NILES – Niles Community Schools could be teaming with the City of Niles.
Superintendent Doug Law said Monday the district is required by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to acquire special permits for waste water and storm water discharges. Law said the permits are mandated because Niles is considered an "urbanized" location.
The district has been working with the city to form a plan that will allow Niles schools to be covered under the city's permit, Law said.
The district, he added, is hoping to cover part of the cost of the city's permit fee in order to avoid paying for a separate permit for the schools.
"It's probably a couple thousand dollars for the school district," Law said.
The Niles City Council adopted a resolution during their Oct. 9 meeting approving of the inter-agency agreement.
Also at their regular meeting Monday night the board of education:
Received an overview of the math program at Ring Lardner Middle School by math teacher Ann James;
Approved new teacher contracts for Niles High School teacher Scott Desenberg and Northside Child Development Center teacher Michele Manis;
Was presented with preliminary enrollment numbers. Law said the estimated count for the district at this time is about 4,020 students.
