Charities here get $167,780 from United Way grants

NILES - The United Way of Greater Niles has announced the following grants for 2006-07:
American Red Cross, Blood Collection and Disaster Assistance, $8,000
Berrien County Cancer Service, Home Healthcare and Nursing Services, $20,000
Berrien County Council for Children, Abused Children's Assessment Center, $8,000
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Berrien and Cass County, Youth Mentoring Programs, $18,000
Boy Scouts of LaSalle Council, Youth Development, $3,000
Child &Family Services, Link Crisis Center and Guardianship Services, $5,000
Christian Service Center, Utility Assistance Program, $1,500
Girl Scouts of Singing Sands, Youth Development, $3,000
Niles Association for Exceptional Citizens, Recreational Programs for Mentally and Physically Disadvantaged, $3,000
Multicultural Involvement, “Fresh Start” Program, $7,000
Safe Shelter, Domestic Violence, $16,800
Northside Childcare, Subsidized Child Care. $2,000
Salvation Army, Utility Assistance, Rent Assistance, Soup Kitchen, $30,000
Samaritan Center, Counseling Fee Subsidies, $1,000
Volunteer Center of SW MI, Volunteer Mobilization, $6,000
Niles-Buchanan YMCA, Membership &Program Scholarship Assistance Program, Water Safety Program, Summer Day Camps and Youth Sports Programs $17,700
Funding decisions are made by local volunteers on the Fund Distribution Committee and the Board of Directors.
Separate from the amounts listed above, individual donors designated an additional $17,780 directly to charities through the United Way of Greater Niles.
Supporters may make pledges at any time of the year.
