CASSOPOLIS — Cass County will be searching to fill the county’s top administrative post following the resignation of administrator Matthew Newton.
The Cass County Board of Commissioners announced that Newton has officially resigned from his role as County Administrator, with his final day of service being Tuesday, Dec.24.
The board has appointed Jennifer Rentfrow, the County’s Finance Director, to serve as Interim County Administrator. Newton and Rentfrow will work closely over the next week to ensure a smooth transition for the organization and the community.
“The Board remains confident in the strength and capabilities of Cass County’s leadership team and staff to continue serving the needs of our residents during this period,” the board said in a joint statement. “We look forward to working with Ms. Rentfrow in her interim capacity as we navigate this next chapter. We thank Matt for his service and wish him success in his future endeavors.”
Newton was appointed administrator in July 2022. A Decatur native, he served as Cass County Deputy Administrator from 2020 to 2022 and was Decatur’s village manager before that. In October 2022, Newton and the Cass County Board of Commissioners approved a $9.7 million courthouse renovation project, which allowed for the renovation and reopening of the historic building in October of this year.
“I am excited for the next chapter, but I am confident that Cass County will be in good hands,” wrote Newton in a letter to staff. “The future here is bright and that is, in no small part, a testament to the dedication, passion, and expertise that all of you bring to the County every day. I will never forget the great people I had the pleasure of working with every day and wish each and every one of you all the best.”
