NILES — To prepare for the jolly old man in red, Niles Mayor Nick Shelton is once again inviting residents of the greater Niles area to participate in the Sights and Lights Decorating Contest by decorating their homes for the holidays.

With the help of now City Council member Sheila Koebel and Niles resident Ambrosia Neldon, Shelton created the contest in 2021 as a way to lift spirits amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, dozens of people have participated in the contest.

“This little contest has become such a fun tradition in our community,” Shelton said. “Families and neighbors show off their holiday spirit with incredible decorations, local businesses spread generosity by sponsoring awesome prizes, and everyone gets to enjoy the magic of the season. It’s a win for everyone — and a reminder of how special our community really is.”

Though Shelton only holds jurisdiction over the City of Niles, interest in neighboring townships was so great that he decided to include the entire 49120 zip code.

To participate, entrants take a photo of their home decorated for the holidays or winter and submit it. Then, after the registration period lapses, the Greater Niles area votes on their favorite decorations. The winners receive prize packages donated by several local businesses, which will be listed on Mayor Shelton’s Facebook page.

Entries will be accepted Wednesday, Nov. 27 through Friday, Dec. 13. Voting will take place Monday, Dec. 16 through Saturday, Dec. 22. Winners will be announced Monday, Dec. 23 on Mayor Shelton’s Facebook Page. Prizes will be awarded to the top 5-10 vote earners (based on prize packages received).
