Educators are perhaps the greatest population of unsung heroes in Berrien and Cass County. This school year, Leader Publications will publish a weekly spotlight featuring teachers and staff throughout the Dowagiac Union Schools district, giving the community a chance to get to know the hard-working individuals shaping their children’s lives.

Name: Melissa Lillie

School: Kincheloe Elementary

Grades/subjects taught: Kindergarten, First and currently Second grade

Where did you attend college? Western Michigan University

How many years have you been teaching?

How many years have you been with your current school? I have been teaching for 14 years. I have been at my current school for 10 years.

Why did you decide to become a teacher?

I decided to become a teacher because I have always loved working with children.

Outside of school, what do you enjoy doing for fun?

Outside of school I enjoy spending time with my family and friends playing games, watching movies, Trivia Nights, or just sitting around the table chatting.

What is one thing your students may not know about you?

I went to Niles Schools.

Who is your favorite fictional character and why?

I have many favorites but Junie B. Jones is my all time favorite. She’s very entertaining as she navigates riding the bus to and from school. She gives us a unique perspective of a kindergartner.

When you were a student in the grade you teach, what were your favorite hobbies?

Oh boy, this might date me! I remember playing with Barbies, Care Bears, Cabbage Patch Kids, and riding bikes. I also loved watching Saturday morning cartoons. We also had a group of families in my neighborhood and were always outside playing with them.

How would your coworkers describe your teaching style and personality?

I am organized and have lots of structure and routine, but I also like to have fun with the kids. They would say I have a contagious laugh.  I am fun loving and up to try new things.

Who is your biggest role model and why?

My mom is my biggest role model. She taught first grade for 32 years. She raised my sister and I as a single mom.  Now I think,  wow how did she teach all day and come home and do all the nightly routines! She was an amazing teacher and put lots of heart into her teaching.

How has education changed in the last 10 years?

The amount of skills required to master by the end of the year.

What is your best advice to parents to help their child continue to grow academically?

Read, Read, Read! Reading with them, to them, and letting them read to you.

If my students learn one thing this year, I hope it is… to learn the curriculum but more importantly how to be a kind and thoughtful friend to everyone.
