John Yelape of Niles, Michigan passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at the age of 92 years.

He was born on September 19, 1932 in Niles to John and Rosa (Pirolo) Yelape, and graduated in 1950 from Niles High School.

He was member of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception Parish in Niles.

Following graduation, John entered the United States Air Force where he served in both Iceland and Germany. He worked for the railroad upon his return from active duty, and eventually retired from Conrail. John continued to live in Niles for his entire life where he was an avid golfer, card player, a member of the Elks for many years, and enjoyed trips to the casino. He also played billiards at the Elks, winning several tournaments.

Surviving family includes his nephews, Dennis (Jan) and Steve (Bernadette), as well as his great nieces, Caroline and Jenna Wade, and Erin and Lauren Wade, who were his favorite. John also had the following siblings who passed away: Veto, Francis, Elizabeth, Chec, Nancy, Carmella, and Lena.

Per John’s request, a Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Saint Mary’s Church at a future date. The Catholic Burial Rite will be read at Calvary Cemetery, and will conclude with the Veteran’s Flag Presentation and “Taps”.
