NILES — A Niles man who resisted police and caused damage outside Joey Armadillo’s in Niles Township was sentenced to probation Monday in Berrien County Trial Court.
Darren Daniel, 45, of Niles, pleaded guilty to resisting and obstructing police, breaking and entering-illegal entry and malicious destruction of personal property under $200 and was sentenced to two years probation, 20 days in jail with credit for five days served and $758 in fines and costs.
The incident occurred Aug. 10 at Joey Armadillo’s in Niles Township. Daniel caused a disturbance at the bar and police were called. He tried to go back into the bar and then damaged at least one car in the parking lot before resisting police.
Berrien County Assistant Prosecutor Kate Arnold described Daniel as “completely out of control” with his behavior. She asked for probation in order to address Daniel’s alcohol problem.
Defense attorney Daniel French said his client didn’t set out to cause problems at the bar and agreed that Daniel needs to get a handle on his drinking. “I messed up,” Daniel said.
“When they’re locking the doors to bar your re-entrance, that shows you have a problem,” Berrien County Trial Judge Jennifer Smith said.
An Illinois man who was a porch pirate in 2020 was sentenced to jail.
