PORTAGE — 18 Leader-area runners qualified for the state finals in Saturday’s MHSAA Division 2  and 3 cross country regionals held at Portage.

The top 15 individual runners and the top three teams advance to the state meet, which will be run at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn Saturday.

On the boys side, Dowagiac’s Owen Saylor and Edwardsburg’s George Scupham finished fifth and ninth overall to qualify for the finals. Saylor posted a time of 16:12 and Scupham 16:30 to become the only Division 2 state qualifiers for Dowagiac, Edwardsburg or Niles.

In Division 3, the Buchanan cross country team qualified with a second place finish. John Keser (17:10.68); 14. Liam McBeth (17:25.87) and 15. Jack Sherwood (Buchanan) (17:28.37) placed 11th, 14th and 15th respectively.

On the girls side, the Buchanan cross country team placed second overall with a score of 70 points.  Buchanan’s Madeline Young (20:17.63), Avery Mollberg (21:30.36) and Makynna Williams (21:38.58) placed fifth, 12th and 14th overall. Brandywine’s Alison Murray (21:30.34) and Miley Young (21:33.60) placed 11th and 13th to qualify as individuals.
