NILES — Two South Bend men were sentenced after being arrested for firearms and other charges at a Niles gas station.

     Donovan Lemell Felder, 24, of South Bend, pleaded guilty to possession of a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle and driving while impaired and was sentenced to 12 days in jail with credit for two days served and $1,318 in fines and costs.

     Raejaun Lagarius Jones, 25, of South Bend, pleaded guilty to possession of a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle and possession of a firearm while intoxicated and was sentenced to 15 days in jail with credit for two days served and $308 in fines and costs.

     The incident occurred March 26 at a gas station on Chicago Road in Niles.

     Judge Smith warned both men of the dangers of carrying a loaded firearm into and around a public establishment, calling it a “recipe for disaster”.

“We have shootings in South Bend and here in Berrien County,” she said. “A lot of it has to do with people carrying guns and something stupid happening. If people start shooting, somebody could end up dead, is it worth it? This is how bad things happen over something stupid.”
