EDWARDSBURG — Eagle Lake Elementary School was evacuated following a small fire Tuesday morning, according to Edwardsburg Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Courtney Szucs.
“The Superintendent’s Office and the Fire Department were notified immediately,” Dr. Szucs stated in a letter to parents. “As we have practiced, the students and staff evacuated the building in an orderly and timely fashion. All students and staff are safe and accounted for.”
The fire was quickly contained and the police and fire department investigated the cause of the fire which turned out to be a dishwasher located in the kitchen. Out of an abundance of caution, the decision was made to bus all Eagle Lake students to another school in the district and to dismiss the students for the day in order to ensure safety and to air out the building. While students were awaiting pickup, they had lunch and remained with their classroom teachers.
Dr. Szucs stated that school will be held tomorrow at Eagle Lake Elementary, which will also be the first Late Start Wednesday. Buses will pick up all students on a two-hour delay schedule.
“Our school is committed to the safety and education of all students,” Dr. Szucs stated. “Thank you to all of our staff who jumped in to help, and emergency personnel for their quick response in ensuring that all of our little Eddies remained safe. We would also like to thank all of our Eagle Lake parents for their patience and understanding during the early dismissal process. Together we remain Eddie Strong.”
