NILES CHARTER TOWNSHIP — The Cassopolis volleyball team earned a road win against Brandywine Monday.

The Rangers defeated the Bobcats 25-18, 19-25, 25-23, 25-21 to pick up their first win of the season.

“I thought they played really hard,” said Cassopolis Assistant Athletic Director Heidi Hawryskow, who filled in for head coach Kaisha Martin. “They didn’t give up even though sometimes it seemed like they wanted to. I think it’s a great start to the season.”

Jordan Heiman led the Rangers with 10 kills and team captain Mackenzie Boyer added five. Janayla Franklin had four aces and five kills.

“I think that Boyer does a really good job of building the team together,” Hawryskow said. “Hyman is just a beast at hitting. Our setter Tori Burks just plays the ball really well, and gets it to her hitters.”

Brandywine head coach James Ragosta was impressed with the way his young team battled.

“Cass does a really good job. They’ve got some good hitters,” he said. “They’re just a really good team this year, hats off to them. We had a lot of pluses – I thought we played the net really good defensively, which has been one of our stronger points.”

Adellyn Drotoz had seven kills and 22 digs and Layla Covington finished with seven kills and 14 digs while Kaegan VanSandt added two kills and 23 digs and Macy Pellow four kills and 15 digs.

Ragosta has been impressed with Drotoz’s leadership amidst this season. Drotoz is the team’s lone senior this year.

“She brings a tremendous amount to the group just being on the court, It’s a very unique situation when you have one returning varsity player on varsity. We’re in a very unique situation and she’s just trying to help and be encouraging and when things don’t go how we want it, she’s still being encouraging. I love having her around the team and she definitely helps the girls more than they even know.”

Brandywine faces Our Lady of The Lake at 6:30 p.m. in St. Joseph. Next up for Cassopolis is Centreville at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Buchanan.
