NILES CHARTER TOWNSHIP — Niles Charter Township’s quest for an improved township hall is one step closer to reality.
The Board of Trustees moved Monday to accept a $2.4 million bid from DJ Construction of Elkhart, Ind. for the renovation and expansion of the township hall, located at 320 Bell Rd.
According to township officials, the current township hall has served the community since the 1960s and lacks the space and the infrastructure to meet the growing demands and needs of the community and township staff. The expansion would add approximately 3,100 square feet of space to the building, which will provide more space for staff as well as storage space for important documents and election equipment.
The meeting room will have its own entrance on the west side of the building and township services will also be located on the west side. Township Supervisor Marge Durm-Hiatt said the project is expected to take approximately 270 days to complete with an estimated completion date of May 2025.
Township officials said the project would be funded using approximately $1.5 million from the township’s fund balance and approximately $400,000 from American Rescue Plan Act funds with the remaining cost being paid for by financing.
The township hall will be closed through the duration of the project starting Thursday when staff will begin moving to the township’s new temporary home at the Greater Niles Senior Center, 1109 Bell Rd, Niles. The township will provide services at the new location beginning Monday at traditional hours.
