NILES CHARTER TOWNSHIP — A local high school band is putting on a show for a good cause.
The Brandywine Jazz Collective is hosting a Jazz Cafe at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 27 at the Brandywine Athletic Community Center, 1700 Bell Rd. Admission is $10 with proceeds going toward the purchase of a new marching banner. Jen’s Sweet Treats, beverages and more will be available for purchase.
According to Band Director Ruth Livengood, the band’s current banner is more than 30 years old.
“It’s in really rough shape,” she said. “It’s the first thing that the community sees from the band during parades and it’s at least 30 years old.”
After the Memorial Day Parade, Livengood brainstormed nontraditional ways to raise funds for a new banner, which can cost more than $500. After speaking with colleagues who have organized jazz cafes, she decided to give it a shot.
The jazz collective will feature current and past jazz band students as well as friends of the band. Livengood encourages community members to attend a night of music for a worthy cause.
“We’re just really lucky that we have a lot of talent between our students and our guest artists and our alumni,” she said. “It’s for a really worthy cause.”
