Martha M. Cox, 95, a lifelong resident of Dowagiac, passed away on Friday morning, July 12, 2024, at her Forest Glen Assisted Living in Dowagiac.
She was born on Jan. 31, 1929, in Dowagiac, the daughter of Clare and Marie (Lyons) Gwilt. On June 26, 1953, Martha was united in marriage to Leroy G. Cox. Together they raised 5 sons. After the boys finished school, Martha began working for Dowagiac Public Schools as the superintendent’s Administrative Secretary for over 10 years until her retirement. She was an active member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority.
Surviving are her five sons — Kevin (Mary) Cox, Kent (Marjorie) Cox, Kurt (Melissa) Cox, Chris (Kara) Cox and Quintin Cox; eleven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her husband of 49 years — Leroy Cox; parents; brother — Gordon Gwilt; and two sisters — JoAnn Seiman and Clare Marie Merrild.
A service to celebrate Martha’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 18, 2024, at Clark Chapel-Starks Family Funeral Homes, 405 Center St, Dowagiac, where friends may visit with the family from 1 p.m. until the time of services. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Dowagiac. Memorial contributions in Martha’s name may be directed to Caring Circle Hospice or E. Root Fitch Camp.
