Ruth Elizabeth Newton, of Cassopolis, having attained the age of 90 years, 10 months, and ten days, passed peacefully to eternal life Wednesday, June 19, 2024.
Her life began Aug. 9, 1933 in Volinia Township, Michigan the second oldest child born to Harold and Pearl Ivens. She married the Reverend James Bernette Newton June 2, 1965 in Decatur, Michigan. After fifty-seven years of devoted marriage, he preceded her in death April 18, 2022.
Ruth served as a foster grandparent for Lewis Cass Schools. She was the president of the Chain Lake Baptist District Association Women’s Department, board member for Woodlands Behavioral Healthcare, Helping Hands, and Cass County Council on Aging. Ruth was a Silver Beaver Award winner for Boy Scouts of America. She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church in Vandalia.
Ruth will be greatly missed by family and friends. She is survived by two sons, Ivan Byron of Cassopolis, David (Amy) Newton of Argos, Indiana; eight grandchildren, Erick Wright, Keanna Giles, Ivanna Byron, Robert Ross, Iesha Ross, Haley Luther, Eddy Luther, Marcus Newton; seventeen great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; one great great great grandchild on the way; one special six-year-old friend, Levarius Macon; and a host of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, James Earl Newton; one grandson, LaDale Smith; one sister, Helen Singer; and two brothers, Kermit Ivens, Carrol Ivens.
Family and friends will gather at 1 p.m. Friday, June 28, 2024 for a memorial service in First Baptist Church, 17747 South Street, Vandalia, Michigan 49095.
