Eung Soo Chai, 71, passed away of natural causes May 17, 2024 in his home in Vandalia, Michigan. His life began in Seoul Korea on July 15, 1952 during the Korean War. He was brought to America by an organization of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in 1957 and was adopted by Bernice and Steven Lilly of Vandalia.
He began his military service at the age of 17 in the United States Army. He was a Veteran of the Vietnam and Desert Storm wars. He served in the National Guard while attending Western Michigan University. He proudly served his adopted country over the span of thirteen years. His last duty station was United States Army Camp Humphres, located in the heart of South Korea, providing him the opportunity to explore his birth country and learn more about his heritage and culture. He returned to Vandalia where he worked for the railroad and spent his remaining years.
Eung Soo will be greatly missed by family and friends. He is survived by his children’s mother, Cathy Y. Chai; two sons, Bryan Chai and David Chai; two daughters, Rebekah (David) Tobias, and Chloe Chai; five grandchildren, Kylie, Annabella, Arieana, David John, and Asiah; He was preceded in death by his oldest son, Allen E. Chai.
He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony in Fort Custer National Cemetery where he will be accorded military honors.
