CASSOPOLIS –  A man living in Chicago who illegally entered the United States from Mexico was sentenced to prison Friday in Cass County Circuit Court for attempting to sell methamphetamines.

David Ramirez Sanchez, 32, of Chicago, pleaded guilty to delivery/manufacture of meth and was sentenced to 24 months to 20 years in prison. He has credit for 101 days served and must pay $198 in fines and costs.

     The incident occurred Feb. 20 in Silver Creek Township.

     Cass County Circuit Judge Mark Herman noted that Sanchez was stopped by police in Silver Creek Township after failing to stop at a stop sign. Police found meth and a glass pipe when they searched him.

     “You said you brought the meth from Chicago to trade for tools for your work as a roofer,” Judge Herman said. “You said you had $5,000 in cash in the vehicle. It’s a little hard for the court to believe that you came here to trade meth for tools when you had enough cash on hand to buy those things.”

     The judge noted that this was Sanchez’s second felony and that he had been deported back to Mexico after his first felony conviction.

“Obviously you returned, but this time you’re dealing meth by your own admission,” he said. “Immigration was again notified with this arrest.”
