Bucks play longball in win over Rangers

NILES — The No. 3-ranked Buchanan softball team hit three home runs, two doubles and a triple in the first inning of its 17-0 district opener against Cassopolis at Brandywine High School Tuesday.
The Bucks (30-5) scored 11 runs in the opening inning, added five more in the second and one in the third to defeat the Rangers.
In all, Buchanan had 12 extra base hits among their 16 total.
Aspen Berry had a pair of home runs, while Keegan May, Hailee Kara and Hannah Herman also had roundtrippers.
Camille Lozmack and Faith Bartley each had a pair of doubles. Lozmack also had a triple and drove in three runs. Caitlin Horvath and Herman also doubled. Berry and Herman both drove in five runs.
Kara tossed a one-hitter with a pair of strikeouts.
Janayla Franklin had the lone hit for the Rangers.
Buchanan advances to the semifinals to face district host Brandywine at 10 a.m. Saturday. River Valley and Bridgman will square off in the other semifinal.
The championship game is scheduled for 2 p.m.
