Marcellus takes pair from Cassopolis

MARCELLUS — Cassopolis hit the ball hard, but Marcellus came away with more timely hits to earn a doubleheader sweep 9-8 and 13-8 in Southwest 10 Conference action.
Fourth-ranked Marcellus finishes the regular-season unbeaten at 27-0 and the league championship, the first ever in school history.
“We could’ve minimized the damage more, but we showed a lot of resilience and kept fighting the whole night against a pretty good baseball team. We have to be able to make routine plays and control what we can control,” said Cassopolis Coach Nic Davis.
Marcellus won the opener in the bottom of the seventh with no outs when the Wildcats scored on a double steal.
Cassopolis plated one run in the first and seven runs in the third in the first contest.
Marcellus scored once in the first, four in the second, one in the fourth, two in the sixth and once in the seventh.
Trystan Grant was charged with the loss for Cassopolis in the opener. Grant went the distance with three strikeouts and four walks.
Dawson Lehew recorded the win for Marcellus in relief of freshman starter Cale Hackenberg. Lehew struck out four, including all three Ranger hitters in the seventh.
Gavin Anderson tripled for Cassopolis. Aiden McGrew added a single and double. Devyn Garcia and Ethan Pflug both had doubles. Mason Smego, Turner Westrate and Grant added one base hit apiece.
In the nightcap, Cassopolis scored two runs in the first, third, fourth and sixth.
Marcellus tallied four in the first, one in the second and third, two in the fifth and five in the sixth.
Cassopolis pitching allowed eight hits with six strikeouts.
Anderson, Westrate, Trystan and Malachi Ward all singled. McGrew added a double. Garcia added two base hits.
